What to Consider When Considering Houseplants
I wanted to talk about houseplants because they are a magnificent addition to any home. They are beautiful, and they are useful, and I highly recommend having at least one. The number of plants of course first and foremost depends on the available space in your home. Though I do know people who made a jungle in their home, and they love it, I myself however like to move around more freely. 🙂 But I do love plants, both inside and outside, but for now, let’s focus on the indoor plants since not everyone has the outside option.
As much as I love plants, I love animals more, so if you have a pet or pets, please choose wisely as many plants are toxic for your pets, so whatever plant you do choose, make sure you are well informed.
Choose a plant depending on your space and your habits. Some plants prefer more light and some prefer less. Plants that need a lot of water for those of us who like to pamper around them and also those that won’t ask for more than a few drops now and then. There are plants with flowers if you want a little color in your space or basic green ones that are also incredibly beautiful in all of their shades of green. You can have one huge plant that will look great in that corner you can’t decide how to fill, or you can choose a bunch of small ones you’ll move around the house (note that there are plants that like to stay put and punish you when you move them 🙂 ).
It is all up to you. We’ll do a few examples to help you choose but make sure you talk to the nice people who sell them (or at least thoroughly read the instructions) to get all the necessary info and give your plant what it needs.
I would definitely recommend at least one plant that purifies the air, and a great example is Peace Lily or Spathiphyllum. I have had it for years now and it is a great plant. I water it plenty (we both like it 🙂 ) and it gives me beautiful white flowers. It requires very little indirect light (but it needs more if you want flowers) so you can easily find a place for it. It also multiplies itself so you can have two or more without having to buy a new one, you can even give it as a gift. An important warning however is that it is toxic so be careful if you have pets.

On the other hand, you have Yucca which needs a lot of sun and very little water, so if you have a place by the window and don’t want to care about watering too much, this is a plant for you. Also, if you have a balcony, you can take it outside during warmer months. Again, be very careful as this plant is also toxic for cats and dogs.

Another great plant that doesn’t need a special place is Parlor Palm. Give it light (indirect) if you can but if not, it will be fine with some low light. It does like moist though so you can sprinkle some water on the leaves from time to time but you do not have to water it too frequently. And not only does it purify the air but it is also not toxic for your pets, so those are some huge pluses.

I was recently given a Money Tree as a gift and I must tell you, I fell in love with this plant at first sight. First of all, it is a beautiful plant, but I was mesmerized by how fast it started to grow. I got advice to remove this little wire they usually come with as they are happier without it and they really are. It likes bright indirect light and you only water it when the soil is dry. It is also said to bring you good luck and prosperity and who wouldn’t like that? 🙂

And let’s end as we’ve begun, with a flowering plant. Laceleaf or Anthurium is another beautiful plant with heart shaped flowers, and it can bloom all year long. It is a tropical plant so if you can mimic tropical conditions, you will have yourself one happy plant that purifies your air. But it is also toxic for cats and dogs so don’t forget to consider that if you have pets.

There are so many plants to consider, these are just some of the plants I have at home and I’m very happy with, so this is why I recommend them, but of course, feel free to choose whatever is best for you. But do choose some, at least one, because plants bring us joy. 🙂
Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food, and medicine for the soul.
